Lachenmeier, Rosa: Serendipity
SERENDIPITY
The accidentally found and the unintentionally created can, under certain circumstances, be more interesting than that which was consciously intended. This is how the story of the Princes of Serendip tells it: The finds they made by chance, while journeying to their father, turned out to be more suitable gifts in the end than the ones they had originally chosen. With open minds, they recognised the value of the surprising discoveries and grabbed the opportunities presented.
On 1st January 2017, I started this project and rolled out a canvas of 86,6 x 126 inch onto the floor of my studio. I created my paintings on top of this canvas and day by day, the traces of my activity were layered on top of each other. This covered canvas became a contemporary document on which the memory of my painted pictures was inscribed: a kind of diary, an archaeology of my painting.
