Malutzki, Peter: Some Buildings on the Streets of Kharkiv
Ed Ruscha's iconic Artists' Book EVERY BUILDING ON THE SUNSET STRIP from 1966 is now considered a forerunner of conceptual artists' books, is associated with Duchamp's ready-mades or Warhol's serial works and is a sought-after collector's item. Ruscha's Leporello has inspired a number of new versions. My intention was to use the outer form of the famous artist's book for a completely different content. SOME BUILDINGS ON THE STREETS OF KHARKIV shows pictures of houses damaged and destroyed by Russian attacks in the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv. While Ruscha's book has house numbers under the photographs, I used excerpts from the English translation of a speech given by Vladimir Putin on February 21, 2023 (taken from the Kremlin's website). As in previous speeches, he blames the West and NATO for the war in Ukraine.
