Gunnesch, Stefan: A Decent into the Maelstrøm – Hinab in den Maelstrøm
The artist’s book takes up the short story by Edgar Allan Poe, which tells of the Maelstrøm—a violent water whirl in Norway. The design of the book builds up along a horizon line that divides the text blocks of the original English text and the German translation. Circular cutouts at the beginning and middle of the book reveal black-and-white graphics inserted into a foldout page. These graphics show textures of sky and water surface and are printed in the middle of the book rotated 180° and on top of each other. Above and below swap places, cloudy sky and water surface are visually no longer to be seperated from each other. This principle of rotation is also shown in the page numbers of the book.
