Gunnesch, Stefan: A.O. - Der Fall Anna O.
The artist book “A.O.” deals with the medical history of Bertha Pappenheim, also known under the pseudonym Anna O., who was a patient of Josef Breuer and Sigmund Freud.
For the project, a portrait was copied 300 times and treated with different colours and techniques, in the sense of Automatic drawing and painting. The portraits refer to the person of Anna O. retracing her moods visually. At the same time, they become a self-portrait of the artist: The drawings document the search for identity, but also for hiding and disappearing in one's own skin—becoming anonymous, even beyond recognition.
The text part of the book includes the case history (text by Josef Breuer) as well as an introduction of the “Studies on Hysteria” (by Josef Breuer and Sigmund Freud).
