Heidsieck, Bernard: Nous étions bien peu en... In I98O, twenty-five years had passed since the first beginnings, around I955, of what has since been called SOUND POETRY. Assuming that the public attending this Colloquium, on my part, rightly or wrongly, would know nothing, or very little, about this movement, my aim in writing this text was to try to prove that this current could, by right, claim this label of AVANT-GARDE, and that in order to do this I had to define in detail its components, to trace briefly its sources and history with its various achievements or manifestations, and finally to situate its trajectory in the context of other more or less parallel currents which arose during this same period.
