Bowen, Sian: Sensing and Presencing After Hortus Malabaricus, Set 4
The size of the books is based on the earliest 17th century editions of the Hortus Malabaricus, a twelve-volume illustrated treatise on the plants of Malabar. Complex technical processes such as gilding, blind embossing, laser engraving and casting were used for the books. The images reference engravings from the Hortus Malabaricus, herbaria from the historic collections of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Edinburgh, and living plants of the moist deciduous forest documented by the artist during her stay at the Gurukula Botanical Sanctuary in India. Each book explores the same selection of rare plants - albeit through different means and from interconnected source material.
3 volumes, laser engraving, blind embossing, gold drawings, Semi Vellum without chemicals, 11,6 x 15,7 inch, Ed. of 5 Unikat-sets, num., sign., UK, 2021
