Gunnesch, Stefan: waves waves waves
The artist’s book takes Virginia Woolf’s novel “The Waves” as inspiration and develops its experimental structure further in an own text form.
The subject of temporal perception becomes the essential focus of the book’s design. The numbering of the pages is replaced by a time indication that traces the course of a day – from sunrise to sunset.
The typography plays with the interaction of form and content, is text as well as image. The monotonous repetition of the word “waves” runs through all the pages of the book, creating a constantly changing visual constellation reminiscent of concrete poetry.
The middle section of the book shows a sequence of abstract graphics composed of countless small splashes of water.
A quote from Woolf’s novel is placed at the beginning and at the end of the book, describing the position of the sun, the waves and the atmosphere at the beach.
