Gunnesch, Stefan: Hysteria Freud’s essay ›The Psycho-Analytic View of Psychogenic Disturbance of Vision‹ deals specifically with blindness that has its origin in hysteria. The design of the book transfers these themes into an artistic concept. The beginning and the end of the book show full-page collages which are completely covered with white color for lino cut. The chaotic, almost hysterical motifs of the collages are vanishing and blanking out. As an additional element on these white pages, cut-outs reveal portraits of human bodies which were printed on the backside of the paper.
The image part of the book is completed by another chapter that includes a text extract from Freud’s essay in German and English language. The first part of the text, in which Freud refers to the phenomena of the hysterical blindness, is printed on black paper. Just a closer look makes the text visible and readable. The following text segments are printed on grey paper and are complemented with collages of historical images.
