Schäpers, Veronika: Solitude As coronavirus spread around the world in the spring of 2020, a variety of charts, tables and graphs were published, showing the risk of infection, the number of cases and much more more in a variety of forms. The more rapidly the pandemic progressed, the more charts and statistics were produced. One could get the impression that
the horror of the pandemic was to be diminished or at least controlled.
Some of the graphs caught our eye because of their abstract beauty, so the jewelry designer Susan Pietzsch and I began to collect and examine them. Susan Pietzsch collected from her home in Japan and I collected from Germany.
Because of the lockdown and travel restrictions, we were unable to meet face-to-face over the entire period, we communicated exclusively via video calls and e-mails. From the very beginning, we wanted to create a book that would describe beautiful sides of the lockdown should be described, such as the peace and quiet.
This aspect seems to be described particularly well in the chapter "Solitude" in Henry David Thoreau's "Walden".
and so it became the basis of our work. Thoreaus describes
the advantages of living in the solitude of his cabin in the woods of Massachussetts to which he retreated for two years.
All of the materials used come from medical or
restoration needs. For example, the text is printed on filter paper originally used in laboratorie as are the round filters with the corona graphics. To emphasize the clear and almost sterile impression, we did not use any color, the book lives from the different materials and shades of white. The typeface, specially designed by Alex Sonderegger of so+ba in Tokyo, is embossed into the soft filter paper into the soft filter paper.
Each page of text shows the fine outline of a circle, each representing one of the 14 filters which are enclosed with the book. The round paper filters bear abstract characters and elements, all of which have their origin in graphics depicting worldwide corona events in the
Spring 2020. In the context of Thoreau's praise of nature and solitude, however, also seem like small botanical elements.
The book is bound in a flexible cover of paraprint fleece, a material used in the
restoration when laminating delicate surfaces. Book and filter
are stored in a package made of archival cardboard with title in silkscreen.
